Conclusions

Even though most Christians accept Jesus’ pronouncement that “ . . . of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, [nor] the Son, but [only] the Father” (Mark 13:32), many still have a tendency to “read the signs” to see if they might not be able to gauge when the rapture might occur, which is why Christians—and especially dispensationalists—tend to be, if not precise date-setters, at least general date-setters. In other words, while most doomsday ministers will not set a precise date for doomsday—though a few are willing to do so—almost all of them interpret every noteworthy news event, tropical storm, earthquake, and economic downturn as evidence that the “end” (or is it the beginning?) is near, making them implicitly guilty of date-setting. The fact that some of them have been at it for almost forty years demonstrates not only how good they are at convincing others, but also how almost everything can be interpreted as being a sign of the end if one believes strongly enough.

Additionally, by not setting precise dates—or being forgiven by their followers when they do and the date passes uneventfully—they ensure themselves many more years of ministry work and TV revenue. This may sound harsh, but unless Christians begin holding these prophets of doom accountable for what they say, I’m afraid the church will continue to live in a sort of pre-doomsday environment in which the future looks bleak and the only hope for a better world is for God to wipe out most of the planet and start from scratch. Personally, I can’t imagine anything that would infuriate a God of love more.
